Michael Stovall has farmed since he was 8 years old. He followed in the paths of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all farmers.
He first experienced discrimination from USDA in 1993 when he was denied a loan. Even though he appealed and won, the USDA reneged on his offer. He has a findings of discrimination and breach of settlement agreement. He is president of the Independent Black Farmers Association.
