For 12 years, the Whistleblower Summit & Film Festival has captivated its audiences with films that explored whistleblowing from differing realms, environments, and unique walks of life. The theme for this year’s event is “Media Matters - Whistleblowers, Investigative Journalists & Enterprise Reporting”. Through this theme, our event will spotlight those brave professionals who use the media to expose social injustices. These include investigative journalists who, with the power of the printed word, blew the lid on corporate or government corruption, and filmmakers who provided greater awareness for whistleblower causes through documentary or narrative filmmaking. This year’s WSFF event will host speakers and panel presentations that will reflect this theme.
The 2024 Whistleblower Summit & Film Festival will take place from July 26 to August 4 on Capitol Hill and Embassy Row in Washington, DC. ACORN 8 will partner with American University to host this year’s event.
“ACORN 8 was the first NGO to promote National Whistleblower Appreciation Day by hosting the Whistleblower Summit for Civil & Human Rights on Capitol Hill, that focused on whistleblower policy and legislation over a decade ago,” said Summit Co-Founder and AU SOC Alumni, Michael McCray. “This year, we are pleased to introduce National Whistleblower Appreciation to an entire new audience—the American University SOC community; through the Whistleblower Summit & Film Festival, which highlights whistleblowers in journalism, investigative reporting and documentary or narrative filmmaking.”
“The Whistleblower Summit & Film Festival is a great example for our students because whistleblowers are essential to journalism and documentaries,” said Professor Emeritus Randall Blair, retired Director of the Producing Film, Television, & Video Program. “After all, the motto for the A.U. School of Communications is Media That Matters.”
